Safe working through smart integration

Allseas is an international player in large, complex and technological offshore projects. For both their office in Delft and the new shipyard in Heiningen, they needed a uniform solution for the daily access management of the many employees, visitors and contractors. With uniform roll-out to several European sites.

The then existing access control system in Delft was outdated and not suitable for the new Heiningen site, which sometimes employs up to a hundred contractors a day. Several issues came up in the search for a solid basis for its access control policy. Is it possible to interface with our ERP system? How are (sub)contractors quickly registered and is it clear whether they hold the right certifications to perform work? Allseas also wanted to roll out the access control system uniformly to sites in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium.

Long-term security partner

Arjen van den Brink, Vessel Coordinator Allseas: ‘Our systems no longer matched our requirements and, in addition, new functionalities were needed. Especially given the ever-changing laws and regulations. Besides replacement, there is also a need for integration and synergy between systems and procedures for both onshore locations and offshore. The solution must be flexible, uniform and future-proof. In addition, we are looking for a party that is expert in its field and can support as a security partner for years to come.’ Nsecure was one of the parties allowed to submit a proposal for this complex challenge.

Solid foundation for the future

Based on technical knowledge, working methodology and experience, YIM was chosen. YIM presented a solid basis as a solution direction to Allseas: the access control solution ‘AEOS’ and its workflow & identity service ‘Dataclient’, aimed at the sign-in and accreditation process for contractors and visitors. The concept meets all requirements, including a link to Allseas' ERP system for time registration. Meanwhile, the chosen solution is proving its added value and the concept has been rolled out across the sites.

Results noted

  • A solid foundation that fits Allseas' future perspective and requirements around uniformity, safety and laws and regulations.
  • Applications, authorisations and accreditations are faster and safer;
  • The integration of systems and protocols reduces the number of error messages and time in system operations

World's largest working vessel

Besides providing a solid foundation for Allseas‘ sites, Nsecure was asked to help think of a flexible solution for the “Pioneering Spirit”: Allseas’ largest working vessel in the world. The Pioneering Spirit is 382 metres long and 124 metres wide, comparable to eight football fields. The ship is used worldwide to remove and install oil and gas platforms and lay pipelines.

When the ship docks in a port for maintenance or project preparation work, large numbers of people have to get on and off board to work in a short period of time. It is then imperative that these access flows are controlled.

Plug & play contractor management in shipping containers

Previously, Allseas used several temporary rental solutions to provide access to contractors. Nsecure recommended an in-house solution to Allseas: a plug-and-play system built from two shipping containers. Created to provide 24/7 global access via the same access control system (AEOS). Both sea containers are fitted with turnstiles, with one of the containers additionally equipped with a security logon with passport scanner. A unique aspect of this project is that the sea containers were custom-made for Allseas. Besides the technical necessities, specific requirements such as air conditioning and operable lighting were also taken into account.

‘A flexible plug & play installation, is praised in the industry during overhauls and shutdowns. The solution for Allseas has already been deployed several times and provided quick and controlled registration of all contractors and employees. Nsecure's solution has proven its services and, due to its flexibility, contributes to the fast and efficient regulation of visitor flows,’ says Arjen van den Brink.
